The much-touted easing of home ownership rules for overseas Vietnamese, also known as Viet Kieu, was once again put on the table for discussion at the National Assembly session late last week. Overseas Vietnamese will have a greater chance of buying homes in their homeland as the Government has submitted to the legislature draft revisions to Article 126 of the Housing Law and Article 121 of the Land Law. Vietnam has three million Vietnamese residing abroad and around 70% of them still hold Vietnamese citizenship. However, 140 Viet Kieu have been approved to own homes in the country since the introduction three years ago of the Housing Law.
